Frank Schell's sketch for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper: Fort Macon's interior on the morning of the surrender, April 26, 1862.

Note that the hot shot furnace, on the right, has an extremely steep, high roof! Paul Branch, who provided this picture, assures us that this was probably a misrepresentation on the part of the artist, as there are several aspects of this drawing that are "out of sync."

Also note the timber shields, known as blindages, leaning against the fort's inner walls, on either side of the far staircase. These were used as protection against shot and shell falling within the fort.
