What did you do when your powder magazine was by necessity a deep, dark hole, and fire was the only means by which to see what you're doing? Well, mostly you were constantly terrified of instant oblivion, but note the lantern atop one of the barrels of powder from the Laflin & Rand Powder Company of Baltimore, Maryland: Enclosing a lit candle in glass protected the poor guy holding it at least a smidge. And yes, I know those barrels say Lafin & Rand, but a little research reveals that the powder company's name was Laflin & Rand. Maybe whomever stenciled those letters ran out of lower case L's.
