Just a brief drive from Fort East Martello brings one to Key West's West Martello Tower. When preparing for the notionally inevitable Confederate onslaught in 1862, the Federal plan was for a total of four martello towers to be built on the island, to help secure the landward approaches to Fort Zachary Taylor, which remained in Union hands. None of these martellos were ever fully completed, and only East- and West Martello Towers were even begun before the war was over.

Today West Martello Tower is the home of the Key West Garden Club's Joe Allen Garden Center. Unfortunately we arrived at 4:45pm, just in time for a very speedy runthrough, but at least admission was free.
