When one reaches the interior of Fort Griswold through the Sally Port: Gasp! There's the Groton Monument! Doubtless the fort's garrison of 1781 felt something was missing from this scene, which is why the Monument was built in 1830. Because let's face it, without that monument heroically jutting in the center of the frame, this picture wouldn't be nearly as cool.
