This is one of two identical powder magazines built during the fort's initial construction phase, 1808-1812. During the Civil War, the Confederate garrison used these two rooms for prepared ammunition storage. To protect the contents of these magazines, Confederate engineers erected a barrier of railroad iron to shield each of the doorways. How do I know all of this?
