Fort Jefferson's southern bastion! As some may have already surmised, Fort Jefferson is not technically a starfort, but a polygonal fort. Polygonal forts became all the rage in the later 18th century, when advances in artillery somewhat diminished the defensive ability of the classic starfort. But to me, any masonry fort with protruding bastions that cover recessed curtain walls is, in effect, a starfort, because it serves the same purpose in much the same manner.

Now that that's out of the way, don't Fort Jefferson's bastions look like some sort of avian head?! That beaklike leading point on each is greatly amusing.
