Fort Jefferson's western wall. Hey, there are the Totten Shutters! Looking as pristine as they do, they would be fiberglass reproductions of the original iron shutters. An effort to replace the originals with these more easily-maintained replacements has been underway for some years. I had noted several such reproductions in place at Fort Massachusetts off of Gulfport, Mississippi the previous year (though of a vastly smaller size, Fort Massachusetts, on its own far-flung, sandy island, seemed similar to Fort Jefferson in many ways). One of the Rangers at Fort Massachusetts toild me that the fiberglass repros of the Totten Shutters were great, but that heavy storms tended to rip them out of the fort and deposit them in the Gulf of Mexico.
