The interior of Fort Jefferson's southern bastion is dedicated to Dr. Samuel A. Mudd. Mudd was the doctor who treated John Wilkes Booth after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in April of 1865...and Mudd may or may not have played some conspiritorial role in the assassination (it seems like not, but it's all a pretty tangled web). He and three other folks, found guilty of conspiracy to accomplish this wicked deed and sentenced to life in prison, were deposited at Fort Jefferson in July of 1865.
