Casemates may have afforded decent protection against an attacker's cannonfire, but they were almost always dank, cold (and/or hot, depending on the location) spaces. Most starforts I've visited have sported calcification similar to this, where seepage drips down the walls. I always have to taste the water coming from these deposits of course, just in case they actually taste like something, but I can assure you that they never do: Gritty, but not flavorful. One would expect that each starfort would have its own unique flavor. Not.
