Except for the giveaway TO B BATTERY sign, an attacking Englishman might run right past this unassunming little outbuilding, which is the stairhead to the battery's ingress.

Frustratingly, we managed to finish our Fort Knox experience without visiting, much less even being aware of, Batteries C and D. Long after I was back in Virginia, I learned that Battery C is a tiny thing designed to mount only three guns, which looked over Battery A's shouder to the direct south of the fort, and Battery D mounted eight guns, atop one of the fort's many striking glacis (Glacese? Glacises?) on the fort's northern side.
