These were iron embrasure shutters of a design invented by Joseph G. Totten, Chief Engineer of the US Army from 1838 to 1864. They were intended to shield gun crews from return fire while they were reloading, and I was extremely excited to see them, as though they were standard issue on just about all American masonry forts in the mid-19th century, I hadn't ever seen them in place before. |
