Interested parties did some excavation at Fort McHenry in 1958 and found, among other things, the famous flag's original crossbrace! This informed the misinterpretation of exactly where the flagpole had been standing in 1814, and today's flagpole is, we are assured, in the proper spot.

This part of the museum was probably the best in Fort McHenry, focusing on excavations and archaeology of the fort area.
