Fort McHenry's Outer Battery was started in 1840, armed heavily during the Civil War to keep the Confederacy from getting frisky in the Baltimore area, and mounted huge 15-inch Rodman Guns until 1912. During the War of 1812 there were Upper and Lower Water Batteries, but they were rather puny affairs by comparison to the Outer Battery.
