One of course is expected to pay $7 to visit Fort McHenry. One could certainly sneak past the Visitor's Center on the way in and avoid this fee, but one would feel unpatriotic and skullduggerish were one to do so. All along the fence on the Seawall Trail, however, one is periodically reminded of the fee by this sign, which amusingly features a bird, suggesting that in the US, one is free to pay a fee. Also amusing is the image of what one imagines is a pointy-handed family, who seem to be shaking their sharp fists at the Department of the Interior for making them pay.
