A model, made in 1897, of a 12-inch barbette gun! This gun, while not characteristic of the artillery at Fort Monroe, was adopted for service by the U.S. Army in 1892. This type of carriage did not offer the gun crew as much protection as its disappearing counterpart, nor could the gun be fired and loaded as rapidly. However, this type of weapon was considerably less expensive to manufacture.
