The last battery of any kind that I could find heading north up the little island was this, Battery Ruggles. This was a mortar battery, featuring four separate emplacements that held four 12-inch mortars each, making for what one imagines was a great deal of noise for the many men it took to keep all those mortars firing in unison.

The idea of such batteries was to drop huge mortar shells onto the unprotected decks of attacking ships. I knew exactly what this battery was for when I saw it, having investigated a similar emplacement at Fort Washington in Maryland!
