The entrance to Fort Niagara's Casemates. Through the War of 1812 the fort's walls were made of wood and earth, but starting in the 1840's they were rebuilt with masonry. In 1862 war with Great Britain seemed a reasonable possibility, and there was Fort George right across the river, so casemates were added to various strategic spots within Fort Niagara's walls.
