The South Redoubt was built by the British in 1770 to protect Fort Niagara's Gate of Five Nations, the fort's main entrance from 1756 until 1803, on the river side of the South Bastion. I didn't climb up into this Redoubt, as the rain had stopped, the tourists had arrived and there were what sounded like 300 folks up there, happily jabbering away in an unidentified language, with whose Redoubt experience I did not choose to participate.
