As I believe I've mentioned several hundred times, I visited Fort Macomb later this same afternoon, which meant I got to see the only two of these citadels in the United States...and I was surprised to see that Fort Macomb's citadel still had a roof, whereas Fort Pike's clearly does not. I was unaware at the time of two important facts: a) Fort Pike's citadel was granted a second story, which b) burned away in 1887.

The dead-looking concrete at the far end of this shot certainly looks menacing next to all the friendlily-deteriorating bricks, but it reveals a shocking truth: The center of the three chambers of Fort Pike's citadel has been remade into a clean, climate-controlled modern meeting space!
