We are back inside the Castillo now, as you may be able to tell. This was, to me, the most exciting portion of the fort's interior: The Powder Magazine! Built in 1675, it is one of the Castillo's oldest rooms. It is only accessible through that little 3-foot-high crawlway at bottom right.

Though undoubtedly cool, it proved too damp to work for its intended purpose. This room was used as a trash pit during the British siege of 1702 (1500 people living in a cramped Castillo probably produced lots of materials that needed to be stuffed away somewhere) and then sealed shut. "When reopened over 100 years later, animal bones found inside inspired many local myths, one claiming the bones belonged to lovers buried alive inside the Castillo."

Ooo, I want to make up a myth! How about, ...when reopened over 100 years later, animal bones found inside inspired a myth that the Castillo had been solely defended by a martial species of cattle, armed with bronze horns and a playful sense of humor.
