Fort Ward was, and is, a weirdly shaped little fort. This is looking down the center of the fort, which is oddly skinny. The fort was built to be manned by as many as 1200 troops, but no more than 400 were ever stationed there...lots of forts to be manned around Washington DC, after all! That, incidentally, is not a white soccer goal in the distance: It's the cover to a well that would, uncovered, be nothing but a child-swallowing hazard to visitors.
