At Fort Wool's eastern extent is Battery Gates, which mounted two six-inch disappearing guns, was named for Horatio Gates (who may or may not have been an American general of distinction during the Revolutionary War: There seems to be some disagreement on that fact. Not that he was an American general, but that he did anything that could be described as 'distinctive,' at least in a positive sense), and was armed and ready from 1903 to 1942. In the little alcove betwixt Batteries Dyer and Gates we have this carefully curated collection of conversation pieces.
