Slowly walking back to the boat we see Battery Lee, at Fort Wool's southwestern extent. This is an Endicott battery that mounted four, three-inch guns from 1905 to 1942, when its guns were relocated to Fort Story at Virginia Beach. Battery Lee was named for "Light Horse Harry" Lee, who dashed about in an heroic fashion during the American Revolutionary War, served as the ninth governor of Virginia, and fathered Robert E. Lee, who would go on to become the most cultured and revered gentleman of the American south. As this battery was built and named in the south at the start of the 20th century, it's a good bet that most folks imagined it to have actually been named after Robert E, not Harry.
