Fort Wool is of course merely an extension of Fort Monroe, to Fort Wool's north across the Hampton Roads waterway. Before Fort Monroe stands Old Point Comfort Lighthouse, which was originally built in 1803 (one of the young American government's first lighthouses), and was captured by the Royal Navy during the War of 1812. Fort Monroe was begun not long after that war's conclusion, so that nobody would ever capture this precious lighthouse ever again.
