Fort Wool is a cool little fortification, which is separated from most of the ravages of the litterbug public by only being accessible by boat. It's a great time capsule of different eras of American seacoast fortification, and it's quite sad that it is no longer, as of this writing in November of 2019, open to visitors. It seems unlikely that the city of Hampton will find the money to prevent Fort Wool from sinking further into its foundations, making it even more dangerous for the unwary to stomp about on it. I'm glad I went when I did, because who knows when the Miss Hampton II will resume its daily voyages thereto!
