On the left we have tongs, with which heated shot could be removed from the rack, upon which the ball had been placed by the fork, which we will meet shortly; a ladle, into which the shot would be placed with the tongs, and from which the heated shot could be dumped into the cannon; and a fork, which was used to lift the shot out of the furnace, place it on a metal rack (?) from which it could be picked up with the tongs and placed on the carrier or ladle. A lot of steps, just to deliver a projectile that would bonk effectlessly off of an iron turret!
