Had I not visited Fort George the day after I visited Fort Niagara, I never would have known that the American fort's hot shot had, indeed, at least almost caused something important to blow up. That something important was Fort George's Powder Magazine, whose roof was struck by American heated shot and set aflame on October 13, 1812. From the slightly over-precious historical marker at the magazine:

Captain Vigoureaux of the Royal Engineers was true to his name. During the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13, 1812, the captain saved the fort from disaster when a red hot cannon ball (hot shot) ignited the roof. Without, shall we say, the vigorous efforts on the captain's part, the powder magazine would have exploded.
