A nice rock for Giacomo Constantino Beltrami, an Italian explorer (and jurist and scholar), who departed from this point in July of 1823 in search of the headwaters of the Mississippi. He was certain that he found this source the following month, and though his claim has since been disproven, he was still a great enough guy to get his own rock near Fort Snelling.
